30 Rhyming Riddles for 4 Year Olds

Four-year-olds can hold two or three clues at once and put them together, so these couplets carry a little more detail than the three-year-old set. The form stays the same, because it works: two rhyming lines, a beat you can clap to, and an answer that is a real thing they can go and find in the house.

From Emma: Once they know a few by heart, swap roles — let your child read you the riddle and be the one who knows. Four-year-olds love being the keeper of the answer.

  1. Four legs and a flat little seat,
Pull me up when it's time to eat.

  2. Cold inside, a great big door,
I keep the milk and so much more.

  3. Full of pages, full of art,
Open me — a story starts.

  4. Tiny and black, I march in a row,
Crumbs twice my size I tow.

  5. My neck is long, my spots are brown,
I eat the leaves and look straight down.

  6. Up and down and up we sway,
But I need a friend to play.

  7. Orange and pointy in the ground,
Pull my green top — up I bound.

  8. Stripes of black and stripes of white,
A horse in pajamas, day and night.

  9. Sticky, golden, sweet as can be,
Made for you by every bee.

  10. Two round wheels and a ringing bell,
Push my pedals — off we sail.

  11. Soft and warm across your bed,
Pull me up around your head.

  12. A furry mane, a mighty roar,
The king of beasts and nothing more.

  13. I carry my house upon my back,
And I am very slow, in fact.

  14. Click me on when day is done,
I chase the dark away — what fun.

  15. Blow me softly through a ring,
I drift, then pop — a wobbly thing.

  16. Round and flat with cheese on top,
Cut in triangles — never stop.

  17. Black and white keys in a row,
Press me and the music flows.

  18. I swing from branches, tail and all,
Bananas make me have a ball.

  19. Rub me till the bubbles grow,
Then your hands are clean — hello!

  20. White and cold, I fall all night,
Roll me up — a snowman bright.

  21. I have a handle on my side,
Hot cocoa takes a cozy ride.

  22. Two big wings but not a bird,
I fly you far without a word.

  23. Green outside and red within,
Little black seeds beneath my skin.

  24. Eight long legs, a sticky thread,
I spin my web above your head.

  25. Tick and tock, two hands that go,
I tell you when it's bedtime — oh no!

  26. Steps to climb but not a stair,
Lean me up to reach up there.

  27. Pull me on when raindrops fall,
My hood keeps dry your head and all.

  28. Flowers stand up straight in me,
    I hold their water carefully.

  29. Crack my shell and look inside,
A little yellow sun does hide.

  30. A lid, a handle, off to school,
Your sandwich rides in me — how cool.
