Reciting numbers is not counting
Ask a three-year-old to count five buttons and watch what happens. Very often the numbers come out faster than the finger moves, or the finger touches the same button twice, or they reach the end and carry on to twelve.
Real counting needs four separate things, and children acquire them one at a time: the number words in a fixed order, one word per object and no more, the knowledge that the last word said is the answer, and the understanding that it works on anything — buttons, stairs, dogs.
That third one is the big one. A child who counts "one, two, three, four" correctly and then, asked how many there are, counts again from the beginning has not got it yet. That is completely normal at three, and it is not fixed by more worksheets.
What actually builds it
Counting things that matter to your child, out loud, in the moment. It sounds too simple to be the answer, and it is the answer:
- Stairs on the way up, every single time — the rhythm does half the work
- Grapes onto their plate, one at a time, counting as they land
- How many forks the table needs, then fetching exactly that many
- Counting backwards from five before a jump
- Two more spoonfuls, three more pushes on the swing — small numbers with real stakes
- Sorting laundry into piles and comparing which is bigger
Note how many of those involve the child getting something they want. Counting attached to a real outcome sticks; counting for its own sake at a table is much harder work for a three-year-old to care about.
How to use the two sheets
The count-and-write sheet is for after the counting works in real life, not before. It has two jobs at once — counting a group and writing a numeral — and if the counting is shaky, the writing makes it worse. If your child can count the row but cannot form the number, write it for them and let them trace over it.
The comparing sheet is quietly the more interesting one. The first pairs are far apart, so a glance is enough. The last two are one apart, which forces actual counting. Children who have been guessing all the way down get caught out exactly there, and that is where the useful conversation happens.
Numbers to ten before anything else
There is a strong pull towards teaching bigger numbers because progress feels visible — a child who counts to fifty sounds advanced. It is almost always the wrong direction.
Depth to ten beats breadth to a hundred. A four-year-old who genuinely understands that seven is one more than six, that it can be split into three and four, and that it stays seven whether the objects are spread out or bunched together is far better placed for school math than one who can recite to fifty and thinks a spread-out row has more in it.
That last one has a name — conservation of number — and it arrives somewhere around five. Until it does, a child watching you spread five buttons further apart will often tell you there are now more. They are not being silly; that part of their thinking has not matured yet.
How long a session should be
Five minutes at three, ten at four, and always stopping while they still want more. A worksheet is not a test to be completed, and there is no benefit to finishing all ten rows in one sitting.
If a sheet is going badly, put it down without commentary and count something in the kitchen instead. Nothing about early math needs to happen at a table, and a child who comes to associate numbers with being corrected will avoid them for years.

By around five, most children can count a group of ten objects accurately, recognize the numerals to ten, say which of two groups has more, and copy and continue a simple pattern. Getting there is far more useful than counting to a hundred.

My child counts to twenty but cannot count five objects. Is that normal?
Completely. Reciting the number sequence and counting a set are different skills, and the sequence almost always comes first. Practice with real objects and small numbers — three or four things — rather than pushing the sequence higher.
When should a child write numbers?
Usually around four or five, and after counting is solid. Writing a numeral is a fine-motor job as much as a math one, so if the hand is the problem rather than the number, work on that separately.
Should I use flashcards?
They are fine for recognizing numerals, which is a naming task. They do nothing for understanding quantity, because there is nothing to count. If you use them, keep them short and pair them with real objects.
